Bateman, Patrick, 24 yrs., bartender in saloon 153 Blue Island Av., skull fractured by blow with chair by Dr. L.J. Clark, veterinary surgeon, who got into a quarrel ### the saloon with John McCaffery, struck at him with chair, missing him and striking Bateman, who died within an hour. Dr. Clark was arrested. W. 12th St. Station.

Degnan, James, shot dead, 88th Place near Calumet Av., by Adolph Leine, who thought him a burglar. Peine was exonerated by the Coroner's Jury. Degnan was intoxicated and went to Leine's house by mistake thinking it was his boarding house of 87th St., near Cottage Grove Av.

Doyle, David, 33 yrs., shot dead, saloon, 159 Division St., by Peter Loftus, proprietor of saloon, who was being fired on by Doyle and five companions. Loftus was arrested and discharged. 39th Prect. John Mahoney and Charles Johnson were arrested July 5, by Off's. Spain and Stephens, of Central, and held without bail, July 14, by Coroner's Jury. Johnson discharged by Grand Jury, July term, 1899, and Mahoney was admitted to bail of $2000, Oct. 27, 1899, by Judge Baker.

Daily, John, colored, 39 yrs., killed, throat cut. 5012 Cottage Grove Av., by John Cunningham, alias William Brady, who escaped at the time, but was arrested Oct. 2 and held to Grand Jury without bail, Oct. 7, by Coroner's Jury. Acquitted by jury in C.C. (Judge McEwen) Jan. 27, 1903, on ground of self defense. 11th Prect.

Hudec, James, 17 years old, of 1147 S. Spaulding Av., created a disturbance at a dance at 1566 W. 22d St., and on request Off. Edward Belsky ejected him. He resisted the officer who struck him with open hand. Hudec fell down a short flight of stairs causing a fracture of the skull from which he died at home on May 2. On May 3, the Coroner's Jury found that death was caused as above and exonerated Off. Belsky from any criminal blame.

Magliano, Concetta, 23 yrs. Housekeeper residing at 104 W. Polk St. interfered in an altercation between her husband Donatto and Tony Centanni on July 7th in yard rear of 106 W. Polk St. and received several knife wounds which later proved fatal. Donatte Magliano her husband was exonerated by Coroner's Jury on July 15th. Centanni is still at large.
